Not Vegetarian

I typed in “vegetarian ramen” on Amazon and this came up. It might be good, but it’s not good for vegetarians. For your reference, I finally found a list of ingredients. Here:

Enriched Wheat Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid)Vegetable Oil (contain One or More of the Following: Canola, Cottonseed, Palm) Preserved by TBHQ, Dehydrated Vegetables (Carrot, Green Beans, Tomato, Green Peas, Onion, Celery, Cabbage, Garlic)Salt, Hydrolyzed Corn, Wheat and Soy Protein, Monosodium Glutamate, Lactose, Natural Flavor, Spices, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Sugar, Dehydrated Soy Sauce (Wheat, Soybeans, Salt, Maltodextrin)Cabbage Extract, Chicken Broth, Soya Lecithin, Potassium Carbonate, Sodium Phosphate, Sodium Carbonate, Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate, Turmeric.

Very handy, but not vegetarian

Maruchan, Inc. of Irvine, California, is a subsidiary of the mighty Japanese conglomerate, Toyo Suisan. They have been making those familiar Ramon noodles for years. Yeah, I know, people like making fun of them, but they are handy products, which I have seen used in a number of recipes.

The Maruchan Instant Lunch is very handy. I keep a supply at home for days when I don’t feel like making a lunch. (Although, combining one with a cheese sandwich make a very nice lunch!) Unlike the regular Ramon noodles, the instant lunches come with their own cup, so all you have to do is add water and wait, and you get a delicious soup with lots and lots of noodles. (My parents used to buy these, cook them up, and then pour out the soup, eating only the noodles. But, I think that the soup is very good, and I always eat that up as well!)

Each of these packages contain 290 calories (110 calories from fat), and has 37g of carbs, which is not too bad. It does have a whopping 1,410 mg of sodium (59% of your USDA recommended daily allowance!), but I do think that that is to be expected from an instant lunch – many canned soups contain two servings per container, and have about the same amount of sodium per serving, and I have known people to consume an entire can of soup for lunch.

So, let me just say that this is not health food. But, what it is is a convenient, low-cost lunch – one that you can leave sitting in the back of a cupboard, or slip into a backpack for a warm meal on an outing.

Please note, though, this is NOT a vegetarian soup – it does contain chicken broth, which I think really does violate the whole “California Vegetable” idea.

YUM
